Castaway, written by Bill O'Brien is a historical novel written as the diary of a 13 year old boy, Sam. It is set in 1907 when Sam becomes a cabin boy on the Dundonald; a sailing ship bound for England from Sydney. When the Dundonald sails into a southerly squall it gets into trouble and sinks. 17 of the crew make it to Disappointment Island which is part of the Auckland Islands. So begins an incredible, true, story of survival until help arrives 9 months later.

 

This novel study enables your students to read the novel in 3 weeks and will take 4-5 weeks to complete. Each of the 15 days has a reading based activities and a word from the text which students will find the definition for. There are also 3 follow up activities allowing your students to be creative and show their understanding of what they have read.
