Dawn Raid: The Apology Novel Study
Dawn Raid: The Apology is a historical novel written as the diary of a 12 year old boy. It is set in 2020 - 2022 and is a great reminder of what it was like to live through the Covid Pandemic in New Zealand. This novel is a sequel to Dawn Raid and is also written by Pauline (Vaeluaga) Smith with her grandson Brooklyn Taylor. This sequel follows Sofia Savea's family 50 years after Dawn Raid which is told through Sofia's grandson Jeremy's diary. Once Jeremy learns some of his grandmothers (and New Zealand's history) he gets involved in the quest for an apology from the New Zealand government for the treatment of Polynesian people in the 1970's.
This novel could be read as a stand alone but reading it after reading Dawn Raid adds to the understanding of the impact the Dawn Raids had on the Polynesian community in New Zealand.
