Project Huia is a novel written by New Zealand author Des Hunt. Like of all of Des' novels the reader is taken on the journey of solving a mystery and like all good mysteries things are never as straight forward as they seem.

This novel is set in the Manawatu Gorge in the Manawatu. It begins in the 1940's when Jim and his sister Mavis see a huia. 60 years later Jim is back in the Manawatu with his grandson, Logan, and scientist, Ana,  trying to find DNA of the now extinct Huia. Of course Jim, Logan and Ana are not the only people interested in the long lost Huia and so continues a rivalry that started 60 years earlier. As well as a great action adventure, that will keep your students hooked, this novel is full of science and real life learning.

The novel study includes a range of reading comprehension skills, tier 2 and 3 vocabulary and meaningful follow-up activities that encourage the reader to do more than just read the novel. It is aimed at students in years 7-9 and will take 3-5 weeks to complete.
