Steel Pelicans Novel Study
Steel Pelicans is a novel written by New Zealand author Des Hunt. Like of all of Des' novels the reader is taken on an adventure where there is a mystery to be solved but things are never as straight forward as they seem.
When Pelly's family moves back to New Zealand, from Australia, he leaves behind his friend Dean who has a dangerous obsession with fireworks. Once in New Zealand Pelly makes friends with another new student at his school; Afi. After Pelly and Afi get to know each other Afi's family invites Pelly to spend the weekend with them at their bach in Port Waikato. While in Port Waikato the friends stumble into a smuggling operation involviny local crime family, the Redferns. The boys decide it there job to work out what exactly is going on and things are going smoothly until Dean, with his love of explosions, comes to visit and things no longer go to plan.
The novel study includes a range of reading comprehension skills, tier 2 and 3 vocabulary and meaningful follow-up activities that encourage the reader to do more than just read the novel. It is aimed at students in years 7-9 and will take 3-5 weeks to complete.
