Whale Pot Bay Novel Study

Whale Pot Bay is a novel written by New Zealand author Des Hunt. Like of all of Des' novels the reader is taken on the journey of solving a mystery where things are never as straight forward as they seem.

This novel is set in a fictional coastal town on the Wairarapa coast. Jake loves the freedom; surfing and watching whales swimming up and down the coastline. Jake feels like his freedom has been lost when Stephanie, and her mum, move in with him and his dad. Famous rock star Milton Summer also loves his freedom and escapes to his coastal retreat whenever he can.

When a baby calf becomes stranded no one could predict the events that unfold.

Jake, with the help of Stephanie and Milton, set out on a mission to save the whales, discover the history of the area, fight the press and run for their lives from huge wave. There is never a dull moment for Jake who makes some good, and some not so good, decisions.

The novel study includes a range of reading comprehension skills, tier 2 and 3 vocabulary and meaningful follow-up activities that encourage the reader to do more than just read the novel. It is aimed at students in years 7-9 and will take 3-5 weeks to complete
